Mr. Edwin F. Cook, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 at Erlanger Medical Center. Mr. Cook was born Wednesday, January 17, 1923 in Union County, GA to the late Grady Cook and the late Nell Akins Cook. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Edwin was a member of the Blairsville Kiwanis Club since it was chartered in 1950 and he also served as president twice in the 1960’s and again in 1978-1979. He was Lt. Governor of the 10th Kiwanis Division of the Georgia District in 1985=86. Mr. Cook was president of the Towns-Union Chamber of Commerce from the early 1950’s through the mid 1960’s. He was instrumental in securing the Dress Factory, the county’s first industry to employ mostly women. He served as president of Blairsville Industries for several years. His professional career was as County Executive Director of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, ASCS for 37 years. Mr. Cook secured Union County’s first 9 hole golf course with USDA funds through a 1963 cropland conversion program in cooperation with the Pat H. Haralson estate. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living past master of Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 F&AM.

Survivors include: his wife, Lucille Blalock Cook of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, jean and Pete Kelly of Dallas, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Karen Cook of Trion, GA; granddaughters, Allison Richardson, Laura Cook, Suzanne Kelly and Lucy Cook and great-granddaughter, Adeline Richardson.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 12, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church Of Blairsville with the Rev. B.A. Buchanan, Rev. Troy Acree and Rev. Danny Parris officiating. Music was provided by minister R. Terry Hooper. Interment followed in the Blairsville city Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen; Bob Blalock, Lamar Paris, Charles Hill, Billy Decker, Jim Dobson and Joe fair. Honorary pallbearers include the following: members of the Blairsville Kiwanis Club and special friend, Leon Davenport. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6-8, Saturday, August 11.

Mrs. Lucille Blalock Cook, age 90, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2008 at Heartland Hospice in Cartersville, GA. Mrs. Cook was born September 2, 1917 in Rabun County, GA, to the late Herschel Blalock and the late Bessie Tanner Blalock. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Christian Women's Club of Blairsville. Mrs. Cook graduated from the University of Georgia in 1939 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in home Economics. She moved to Blairsville where she met and married her husband of 65 years, Edwin, and taught Home Economics in the Union County School System for 34 years. Mrs. Cook was twice named as Union County Teacher of the Year. Lucille was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edwin F. Cook, in August of 2007.

Surviving family members include: daughter & son-in-law, Jean and Pete Kelly of Dallas, GA; son & daughter-in-law, Joe and Karen Cook of Trion, GA; granddaughter and her husband, Allison and Tommy Richardson of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Suzanne Kelly of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Laura Cook of Decatur GA; granddaughter and her husband, Lucy and Brian Sosebee of Kennesaw, GA; and great-granddaughter, Adeline Richardson. Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Blairsville with Dr. Fred Lodge officiating. Music was provided by Minister of Music R. Terry Hooper. Interment followed in the Blairsville City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Joe Fair, Jim Dobson, Melvin Cook, Bob Blalock, Randall Adams, and Charles Jenkins. Serving as honorary escort to the family was Bobby Jackson. The family received friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. Mrs. Leila Stephens, age 96, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 13, 1997 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Stephens was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina on July 31, 1900, a daughter of the late JHOSEPH Pierce and Callie Nelson Pierce. She was a homemaker and a member of harmony Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Harve Stephens, in 1956 and two sons, Jimmy Stephens and H.D. Stephens.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Mary and George Rogers of Montgomery, Alabama; daughter, Ruth Holloway of Lawrenceville, GA.; son and daughter-in-law, Loyd “Jeep” Stephens and Lela Stephens of Blairsville; daughter, Cora Dixon of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Maxine Stephens of Aiken, South Carolina; brother, Everett Pierce and sister, Cora Lee Hackney, both of Dalton, GA.; thirteen grandchildren, several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 15, 1997 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. Harley Hunter and rev. Horace Potts officiating. Special music was presented by Sarah Kelley, Louise Delong, and Susie Phillips. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ferrell Penland, Junior Duckworth, Harold Crump, Gene Nelson, Danny Stephens, and Craig Stephens. Interment was in Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Holloway was born on October 7, 1923 in Union County, the daughter of the late Harvey D. Stephens and the late Lilia Pierce Stephens. She was such a loving and caring person who dearly loved her family and enjoyed just being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will e greatly missed by them all. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman Clyde Holloway in 1992. Ruth was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Holloway are two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Marsha Holloway of Winder, GA, Jerry and Rita Holloway of Lawrenceville; one daughter and son-in-0law, Yvonne and Mike Chesler of Buford, GA; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jeep and Lela Stephens of Blairsville, Mark and Maxine Stephens of Aiken, SC; one sister, Cora Dixon of Marietta; five grandchildren, Amanda Holloway, Sherry and Jim Coffield, Holly and Ronnie McKenzie, Angela Chesler and Kyle Chesler; five great-grandchildren, Sarah, Noah, Hannah, Rebecca and Micah Coffield; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, January 4, 2008 at 1 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating. Special music was presented by Tommy Green. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Mike Stephens, Ronnie McKenzie, Jime Coffield and Craig Stephens. Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family met with friends at the funeral home on Friday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Mr. Loyd (Better known as Jeep) Stephens, age 83, of Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, March 13, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Jeep (a nickname) as he liked to be called, was born on May 29, 1926 in Union County. He was a lifelong resident of union County. Jeep was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His favorite things he enjoyed were getting together with his children and grandchildren for a picnic and making a garden. He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII. In the early fifties he was a barber in a shop on the Square (sic) in Blairsville. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources and retired in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Harve and Leila Pierce Stephens, two brothers, H.D. and Jimmy Stephens of Union County, two sisters Mary Rogers of Alabama and Ruth Holloway of Lawrenceville, GA. Mr. Stephens was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Stephens are his loving wife of fifty-six years, Lela Burnett Stephens of Blairsville, five sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Kim Stephens, Kem and Danita Stephens, Craig and Patty Jo Stephens, Sheriff Scott and Teresa Stephens, Chad and Celina Stephens, all of Blairsville, fourteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 16, 010 (sic) at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Jerry Young officiating. Special music was be (sic) presented by Scott Lance. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Mike, Kem, Craig, Scott and Chad Stephens and Aaron Stanley. Serving as honorary pallbearers were, Glenn Gooch, Carlton Colwell, J.W. Payne, Allen Conley, Anceberry Burnett, Charles Rogers, Weldon Reece and Dayton Dyer. Interment followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Thelma Mae Nelson Fair, age 91, of Blairsville passed away Wednesday, December 16, 1998 at her home. Mrs. Fair was born January 1, 1907 the daughter of John Festus and Martha Lee Berry Nelson in Union County. She was a member of Zebulon Baptist Church and had lived most of her life in Union County. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert (Bob) Fair; a son, Johnny Richard (Dick) Fair; a grandson, Brent Hollaran; and a granddaughter, Carolyn Fair.

Mrs. Lorene Nicholson, age 92, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 13, 2002, in Grandview Nursing Home in Jasper, Georgia.

Mrs. Nicholson was born Tuesday, December 21, 1909, in Union County, Georgia a daughter of the late John Festus Nelson and Martha Berry Nelson. She was a homemaker and member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Nicholson had been preceded in death by her husband, Ed Nicholson, in 1984; and a son, Max Nicholson, in 1987.

Mrs. Dimple Everett Nelson age 90 of Grizzle Drive Blairsville passed away on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Harmony grove Baptist Church..

Mr. Ronnie James Nelson, age 56, of Brown Bridge Rd., Clermont, GA, formerly of Union County passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at his home following a brief illness. She was born on April 22, 1941 in Union County, the daughter of the late Gerald Nelson Sr. and the late Judy Campbell Nelson. She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. Before her retirement she was employed at Young Harris College for several years. She was a loving mother, sister and grandmother. Jerrie loved her Lord and saved by Grace.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Wesley Rogers in 1997. She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Mrs. Dana Michelle Nelson, age 38, of Festus Drive, Blairsville, passed away at her home on Monday, November 7, 2011 following an extended illness. Dana was born December 16, 1972 in Marietta, GA, daughter of the late Amos Eugene and Lois Taylor Porter. She moved here in 1993 from Smyrna, GA. She was a Para-pro at Union County Elementary School. She loved to camp and do crafts. Dana was very involved with her church, children and all things kids. She was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Surviving Dana are her husband, Bobby Nelson of Blairsville, son Seth Nelson of Blairsville, daughter, Sarabeth Nelson of Blairsville, brother, Perry Porter of Kennesaw, brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Jan Porter of Ackworth, sister and brother-in-law, Tina and Robert Burnette of Blairsville, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at Philadelphia Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Underwood and Rev. Phillip Davenport officiating. Music was by Becky Rogers. Pallbearers were Greg Odom, Charlie Davis, Gene Nelson, Jack Nelson, Daniel Nelson, Jeremiah Nelson, Larry Payne and Bobby Gooch. Honorary pallbearers were Dugan Hemphill, Don Rogers, Bill Abernathy and Vester Dills. Interment followed in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers if you wish the family suggests that memorial be made to Breast Cancer Research in Dana’s memory.
