Mr. Watson Collins, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, February 22, 1997 in Union County Nursing Home an extended illness.

Mr. Collins was born in Union County, Georgia, on January 1, 1905, a son of the late John Pruitt Collins and Martha Jackson Collins. He was a lifelong resident of this area and had been a farmer and a carpenter. Mr. Collins was a member of and longtime deacon of Choestoe Baptist Church. Mr. Collins' wife, Mert Shuler Collins, passed away in 1988.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Bill Hutson of Marietta, GA.; grandson and his wife, Jon and Jill Hutson of Powder Springs, GA.; granddaughter and her husband, Tamie Hutson Leach and Ken Leach, of Marietta, GA.; great grandchildren, Kelsey and Jonathan Hutson of Powder Springs, GA., and Justin and Jared Leach, of Marietta.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 24, 1997 at 11 a.m. from Choestoe Baptist Church with Rev. Troy Acree and Rev. James Geer officiating. The Eulogy was presented by his grandson, Jon Hutson. Special music was presented by Jo Mosley and John Hunt. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jon Hutson, Ken Leach, David Sedgwick, Dormas Sullivan, Cecil Lance, and Tom Elrod. Serving as honorary escort to the family was all deacons of Choestoe Baptist Church along with C.R. Collins, Albert Winn, Wallace MOSLEY, and Blueford (sic) Dyer. Interment was in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch or to Choestoe Cemetery Fund.

Mr. Homer Jarrett Hood, age 91, of Richard Russell Hwy. Blairsville passed away on Friday, September 17, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Hood was born on May 19, 1913 in Union County, the son of the late Rev. Jim Hood and the late Ollie Saxon Hood. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Lonnie Miller in 1995, a son-in-law, L.C. Miller in 1997 and by his wife, Lydia Dyer Hood. Mr. Hood was a member of Union Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Hood are two daughters and one son-in-law, Doris Miller of Blairsville, June and W.D. Davis of Blairsville, one sister and brother-in-law, Clara Jane and Dewey Burnette of Suches, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Byron Hood of Blairsville, George and Helen Hood of Cleveland, GA, four grandchildren, Sheila Miller, Regina Thompson, Audrey and Junior Lovell all of Blairsville, Katherine Davis of Atlanta, four great grandchildren, Jessica Miller, Landon Lovell, Kalen Thompson and Ashley Thompson, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 19, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Benny Nix and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating. Special music was presented by Mary Lou Nix and Luther Thomas. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Perry Thompson, Joe Garrett and Kelley Gunter. Interment followed in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Lydia Dyer Hood, age 84, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, February 25, 2000 in Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Mrs. Hood was born in Union County, Georgia on Friday, August 13, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel Riley Dyer and Sarah Reid Dyer. She was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a homemaker. Mrs. Hood was a member of Union Baptist Church. She had been preceded in death by a grandson, Lonnie Miler.

Survivors include her husband, Homer J. Hood of Blairsville; daughter, Doris Miller of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, June and W.D. Davis, also of Blairsville; brothers: Woodrow and Sam Dyer, both of Blairsville; grandchildren: Sheila Miller, Audrey Lovell, Katherine Davis and Gina Thompson; great grandchildren: Landon Lovell, Jessica Miller, Kalen and Ashley Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 27, 2000 at 3 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Benny Nix officiating. Special music was presented by The Faith Singers. Mr. Hoyt Jessie Alexander, age 84, of Town Creek Rd, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness. Mr. Alexander was born on Aug. 14, 1918 in Union County, the son of the late Ed Alexander and the late Hattie Hunter Alexander. He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a veteran of the US Airforce in WWII. He had owned and operated Alexanders Store since the early 1950’s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Laura Dyer Alexander in 1995, by a brother, Jimmy Alexander and a brother in law, Ralph Gibson. Mr. Alexander was a member and deacon of Old Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Alexander are one daughter and son in law, Bonnie and Gary York of Cleveland, GA; two sons and daughter in laws, Eddy and Sandy Alexander of Blairsville, Jim and Helen Alexander of Germany; one brother and sister in law, Tommy and Martha Alexander of Blairsville; one sister, Bernice Gibson of Blairsville; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Jimmy Akins, age 83 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, January 26, 2015 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, TN. Mr. Akins was born October 24, 1931 in Blairsville to the late Mauney and the late Ruby Thomas Akins. He was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church. Jimmy was a Masonry Contractor for many years before his retirement. He laid the brick and block on many of the buildings in the local area. Jimmy was a Korean War Veteran having served in the United States Army.

Mr. Ishmael ‘Ish’ Dyer, age 85, of Blairsville, GA. Passed away Friday, NOV., 20, 1998 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Dyer was born in Union county, GA. On Friday, Nov. 22, 1912, a son of the late Narve Andrew Dyer and Laura Townsen Dyer.

Mr. Dyer attended school at the New Liberty School house, and his first public job was in the Civilian Conservation Corps Camps, located in the general vicinity of Goose Creek.

He and his wife, Nellie, were married in 1963, after the construction of the main highway. Mr. Dyer was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie A. Dyer, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Vivian and Rev. Harry E. Poovey, of Monroe NC; son and daughters-in-law, Jack H. and Jane Dyer, of Calhoun, GA; son and his fiancée, Charles L. Dyer and Cynthia Lambert, both of Ocean Springs, MS; and daughter son son-in-law, Geraldine and David Coker, of Blairsville; sister Norma McDonald, of New Smyrna Beach, FL; grandchildren: Lisa Green, of Raleigh, NC; Allen Poovey, of Monroe, NC; Ted Dyer of Trenton, GA; Jeff Dyer, of Calhoun, GA; Kendra Dyer and Carley Dyer, both of Alexandria, VA; Sara Cooper, of Houston, TX; and Molly Coker, of Blairsville, GA; three great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m. from Choestoe Baptist Church with Dr. Harry E. Poovey and Rev. James Geer officiating.

Interment was in the Choestoe Cemetery, under the direction of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, GA.

Dr. Charles L. Dyer, Col. Ret. USAF, age 66 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, February 3, 2012 at his home. Dr. Dyer was born August 16, 1945 in Hall County, GA to the late Ishmael and Nellie Dyer.

Charles graduated from the Emory University School of Dentistry in 1972. He practiced dentistry in the United States Air Force and later served in an administrative role in Washington DC. After 30 years of service to his country, Col. Dyer retired from the Air Force and in 2002 moved back to Blairsville where he owned and operated Apalachee Angus Farm raising registered Black Angus Cattle.

Surviving family members include his daughters, Kendra Dyer and Carley Dyer, both of Fairfax, VA, sister and brother-in-law, Vivian and Harry Poovey of Monroe, NC, Brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Jane Dyer of Calhoun, GA, sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and David Coker of Blairsville and granddaughter, Abby Dyer.

Funeral services for Dr. Dyer were held on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Choestoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Poovey officiating with the Eulogy by Olen Pearson. The body lie in state at the church Monday from 1 until 2 p.m. Interment followed in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by the United States Air Force. Serving as honorary pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Allen Poovey, Dennis Berwyn, Brayden Poovey, Ted Dyer, Jeff Dyer, Jeremy Dyer, Brett Dyer, Joseph Cooper, Daniel Jones and James Cooper.

The family received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, Sunday, February 5, 2012 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
